The date was May 15, 2000. The project was to re-do the existing asphalt walkway that spanned along the storefronts from the public boat launch to the Flander’s Stage. The questions were with what material, who would do the work and when would the new one be completed. The plan, which eventually became the engraved brick walkway, had begun. Directors, Barbara Sullivan and Tom Callahan with the guidance of the Board of Directors, began the research into creating the now completed, enthusiastically received project that the Sunapee Harbor Riverway had initiated.
Once the news was out that you could purchase a brick for as little as $35, the phone started ringing. The mailbox was heaping with reservation forms from people that lived in the area, people who used to live in the area, and from those that just loved the idea. The idea that anyone could participate in this project was overwhelming. In fact, many people bought 2, 3, or more bricks for all reasons. Names of grandkids, family names,
pets, and those in memory are just a few examples of the messages that were engraved in the
bricks. Plus, if you couldn’t fit all you wanted on a brick, you could also include a brief story to be included in the directory that is on display during the summer outside of the Wild Goose Country Store.
So, on May 23, 2002, after what seemed to be the
project that would never end, the new brick
walkway was dedicated. Over 150 people turned
out to hear the stories, meet the people that
assisted in creating the project, and to see for
the first time, their brick.
After a surge of requests for an opportunity to
purchase more engraved bricks, the Board of Directors, at the November 18, 2003 board meeting, voted to begin the process of creating an additional brick walkway in Sunapee Harbor. The second phase,
now finished, completes the arc around the large maple
tree outside the Wild Goose Country Store and the Harborside Trading Company.
